Express is a 7(a) loan the lender approves under delegated authority, on its own forms, with an SBA response inside thirty-six hours. The trade is a $500,000 ceiling instead of five million, and a fifty percent guaranty instead of seventy-five or eighty-five.
What almost every article on this subject gets wrong is the rate. Express does not always cost more. The two programs tier their ceilings differently and cross twice, and below $350,000 the Express ceiling is equal to or lower than standard 7(a).
Figures current as of August 2026Both programs price the same way: a base rate plus a spread, under a ceiling the SBA sets. But they tier those ceilings differently. Express has two tiers; standard 7(a) has four. Put them side by side and the received wisdom that speed costs money turns out to be true only above $350,000.
Spreads are over the base rate. At a 6.75% base as of August 2026, a +4.50 ceiling is 11.25% and a +3.00 ceiling is 9.75%. These are maximums rather than quotes, and maturity stopped affecting them in 2022.
Express does both, which is unusual and underused. A revolving Express line draws, repays and redraws like any business line of credit, with SBA backing and prime-plus pricing behind it. Maturity follows the use of proceeds.
The speed comes from the SBA not reviewing your file first. The lender uses its own forms and its own credit decision, and the SBA responds within thirty-six hours. Two consequences follow, and only one of them is in the marketing.
SOP 50 10 8, effective 1 June 2025 tightened this materially and is the current rulebook. Collateral is required on essentially every loan above $50,000, down from a $500,000 threshold under the previous edition, and every owner of twenty percent or more signs a personal guarantee. The same revision restored a ten percent equity injection for start-ups and changes of ownership and raised the minimum business credit score.
The upfront guaranty fee is charged on the guaranteed half, on a schedule that changes by fiscal year, and is zero for eligible veteran-owned businesses under Veterans Advantage. An annual service fee applies to the outstanding guaranteed balance. Packaging and closing costs are the lender's and vary widely, which is why they are an input in the calculator rather than an assumption.
Guaranty fees returned under the current SOP after a period of waivers, so material written before mid-2025 is unreliable on this point.
The calculator runs the same loan under both program at their ceilings and tells you what the faster answer costs, or saves, at your amount.
